The Sweet Sounds of

By: David Iozzia

Outside, in Sayreville, New Jersey, there was a wintry sky. It was bitter cold and snow was in the air, so I went inside Starland Ballroom. The temperature was warm, the music was hot, and Orange Sky, a band from Trinidad and Tobago, was performing. Their unique sound is a refreshing blend of heavy guitars, old school metal, and their Caribbean influences. It's "roots rock," as the band affectionately calls it. Orange Sky didn't disappoint; they tore it up and rocked the house.

Orange Sky was travelling thousands of miles from their Caribbean home base "to plant new seeds and make new friends," according to lead guitarist/lead vocalist Nigel Rojas. "Releasing a record in the U.S., travelling across the States, and performing nightly has exceeded our expectations. It's been tremendous and overwhelming. We weren't sure how our style of music would be accepted, but so far it's been a dream come true."

Every town and every venue on their first U.S. tour is new to Orange Sky, and I asked what has stood out the most. Nigel replied, "Austin, Texas, which is such a beautiful city. It was the first show we performed on U.S. soil. It's sentimental because it was the first night, we received such a good response. It started the momentum and got the ball rolling."

Don't just take my word for it about this band, check out these cool photos from the Starland Ballroom gig taken by my website designer, Phil Laskowski. Listen to their incredible sound by visiting their website or Myspace page. While you're there, send a message to the band, say hello, and tell them Dave's On Tour sent you!

Watch out in 2006 for Orange Sky. I'm expecting big things from this band, and the Sky is the limit!
